Demurrage vs. detention: the tiers after free time
Demurrage accrues inside the terminal; detention runs from gate-out until the empty return. Both use tiered rates after free days โ e.g. 5 days at tier 1, 5 at tier 2, then top rate. A 2-container move with 12/16 excess days can five-figure you fast.
The tool computes the two sides with independent free-time and tier parameters and prints tier breakdowns. Negotiating extra free days is often worth more than a freight discount.
โ FAQ
Are free times combined?
Carriers differ; combined "free time" pools in- and out-of-terminal days. The tool models the split convention.
Do weekends count?
Calendar days bill, weekends included; check the tariffโs calendar-days clause in disputes.
