๐ Plugs & Voltage Guide
Two checks before shipping electronics abroad
Selling a 220V appliance into the 120V US market โ or a Type-G plug into a Type-F Germany โ invites returns and hazardous reviews. Confirm before shipping: the destination voltage and frequency (US 120V/60Hz, Korea 220V/60Hz, Brazil mixed 127/220V), and the plug standard (A/B, C/F, G, I โฆ). Universal 100โ240V power supplies avoid the problem entirely.
This reference covers 50 major markets. The EU is uniformly 230V/50Hz with C/F plugs, but the UK, Ireland and Malta use Type G; Japan uniquely runs 100V with 50Hz in the east and 60Hz in the west.
Plug safety certifications
Each market enforces its own plug certification: UL/ETL (US), CE with EN plug standards (EU), BS 1363 (UK), PSE (Japan), KC (Korea). "Physically fits" is not compliance โ German 4.8 mm pins vs French 4.0 mm pins cause overheating if mixed. Sourcing certified cords per destination is far cheaper than a recall.
โ FAQ
Can Chinese 220V appliances run in the US?
No โ the US is 120V/60Hz. Use a transformer or ship a wide-voltage version. Conversely, 120V gear plugged into a Chinese outlet will burn out.
Can EU plugs fit UK sockets?
Only via adapters. UK Type G sockets require fused BS 1363 plugs by law.
Why does Japan split 50/60 Hz?
Historical: Tokyo bought German 50Hz generators, Osaka bought American 60Hz. Most electronics cope; legacy motors and clocks do not.
